This hero of the American West was the best known frontiersman in the history of the U.S. Famous as a hunter, scout, soldier and finally congressman, he was revered by people in all walks of life. Davy was born in 1786 in Green County, Tenn. After serving as a scout for Andrew Jackson in the war with the Creek Indians, he joined the Tenn. Militia. Crockett joined 1,081 Americans in the Alamo at San Antonio, where he died in the final assault on March 6, 1836.
