Sitting Bull killed his first buffalo calf at age 10, drew a picture of a buffalo-bull sitting on his haunches and put this on his totem. That is how he eventually go this name Sitting Bull.
He grew up in Dakota country. Though he rose to be a leader among the Dakotas, he never participated in open battle, claiming that he was a medicine man and that his job was to communicate with the spirits and plan the battles. Sine the braves feared medicine men, they remained loyal to Sitting Bull and fought with him. When the U.S. Army came after him, he moved with this family and braves to the badlands of Dakota, an area where the army could not follow him on horses. From there, he organized the various tribes to fight the U.S. Army.
