Dathon was a leader of a ship of the Children of Tama, a technologically sophisticated race of beings with a complex and intimidating language that is based on mythological allusion and metaphor. The Federation has attempted to contact the Children of Tama several times. Though they are a peaceful race, any attempts at communication have been thwarted by the complex nature of the Tamarian's language. Acknowledging the wisdom of an alliance, Dathon created a dangerous scenario that could only be overcome if he and Captain Picard cooperated with one another. The exercise cost Dathon his life, but facilitated understanding between his people and the Federation. The Tamarians and the Federation have reopened dialogue.
