Hordak was a powerful warlord on ancient Eternia, enemy to King Grayskull. During a decisive battle, King Grayskull managed to turn one of Hordak's spells against him, sending him and his Evil Horde to the dimension of Despondos. At his arrival to Despondos, Hordak took over the planet Etheria.

Hordak had a disciple in the dark arts, named Keldor. When Keldor got fatally wounded fighting Captain Randor, Evil-Lyn took him to Hordak's temple, the only place in Eternia where Hordak still could summon his spirit and part of his magic. There, Hordak magically saved Keldor and turned him into Skeletor, in exchange to freeing him from his dimensional exile, which Skeletor never did.

At some point, the Evil Horde returned to Eternia by unknown means. They were defeated, but Hordak kidnapped Randor's infant daughter Adora out of vengeance and used a portal to escape back to Etheria. However, this got him stranded there again.

Several years later, the portals between Eternia and Etheria opened again, and Hordak has tried to take over Eternia and destroy his traitorous former apprentice, Skeletor. this puts the Evil Horde against both the Heroic Warriors and the Evil Warriors.
