The Swordsman was a knife-thorwer at a circus. One day he met a young Clint Barton and trained him. When the Swordsman tried to steal the circus earnings, Clint tried to stop him but the Swordsman defeated him, leaving Clint for dead.

Years later, the Swordsman faced the Avengers (including Clint as Hawkeye) a number of times, until he reformed and joined them. The Swordsman was killed by Kang when protecting his teammate Mantis, who he loved.
