The Hard Master was Tommy "Storm Shadow" Arashikage's uncle. He was one of the co-senseis of the Arashikage Clan, alongside his brother the Soft Master and Storm Shadow himself as the Young Master. Eventually the clan took an American only known as Snake-Eyes, who was Storm Shadow's best friend.

One day, the Hard Master was talking about inheriting the dojo to Snake-Eyes instead of Storm Shadow, since Tommy was too ruthless to lead, and then he was killed by one of Storm Shadow's arrows. It was an assassin named Zartan who took a discarded arrow, but Storm Shadow was believed the culprit, so he ran away. The Hard Master's death split the clan, as while some like Snake-Eyes joined the G.I. Joe team, others like Storm Shadow, Slice and the Red Ninjas joined Cobra.
