Carl Sands is a thief and industrial saboteur who was hired by the Thanagarian criminal Byth to steal Hawkman and Hawkwoman's ship. Byth gave Sands a Dimensiometer, a belt that allowed Sands to become a human shadow. Sands, as Shadow Thief, was defeated by Hawkman, and they have faced each other several times after.
