After migrating to the United States, Sione received professional wrestling training from Rolland 'Red' Bastien. In 1980, he made his debut in a match. Throughout 1981, he wrestled under the ring name King Konga in various National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) regional territories. He then joined Jim Crockett Promotion and later began being referred to as The Barbarian.

In 1987, The Barbarian formed a tag team called The Powers of Pain with The Warlord, managed by Ivan Koloff. They had a fierce rivalry with The Road Warriors and won the NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championship. They participated in the Bunkhouse Stampede and Crockett Cup tournaments, but ultimately left Jim Crockett Promotions.

Barbarian then joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1988, where The Powers of Pain became fan favorites and feuded with Demolition. They had championship matches and participated in the Survivor Series. Barbarian competed in the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania V events. The Powers of Pain later had matches against The Hart Foundation, The Bushwhackers, and The Rockers. They eventually split up, with Barbarian facing Tito Santana at WrestleMania VI as a singles competitor.
