Trained by Killer Kowalski, Big John Studd made his debut in 1972, wrestling on the independent circuit. Over the next decade, he would move between Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, the World Wide Wrestling Federation, and the American Wrestling Association, largely under the name “Chuck O’ Connor”. He held multiple tag-team championships during this time.
In 1982, he joined the WWF and his career skyrocketed quickly, feuding with such stars as Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan. After pairing with manager Bobby Heenan, Studd formed a formidable tag team with King Kong Bundy and continued to challenge the company’s top fan-favorite wrestlers over the course of the mid-80’s.
After a short time away from wrestling, Studd returned in 1988, and won the 1989 Royal Rumble before retiring later that year. Big John Studd was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.
