In 2001, Huffman began his professional wrestling career by participating in the inaugural season of Tough Enough, a reality TV show used by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) to find new stars. He became the co-winner of the competition alongside Nidia Guenard and was sent to the Heartland Wrestling Association for further training.
Maven made his in-ring debut on SmackDown!, facing his Tough Enough trainer Tazz, who forced him to submit. This led to a feud between the two, with Maven eventually defeating Tazz with help from Nidia. Maven then began a feud with The Undertaker after eliminating him from the 2002 Royal Rumble. The Undertaker attacked Maven in response.
On Raw, Maven was awarded a title match against Chris Jericho for the Undisputed WWF Championship, but lost by submission. He later defeated The Undertaker to win the Hardcore Championship, his first title. Their feud ended with The Undertaker defeating Maven and his trainer Al Snow in a handicap match.
At WrestleMania X8, Maven lost and regained the Hardcore Championship multiple times due to the title's 24/7 rule. He was later attacked by the debuting Brock Lesnar during a title defense. Maven was then traded to the SmackDown! brand, where he lost the Hardcore Championship to Raven, leading to him being punished by Vince McMahon. He was later traded to the Raw brand, where he confronted Christopher Nowinski with his former trainer Al Snow.
In 2003, Maven entered the Royal Rumble and attempted to eliminate The Undertaker using a dropkick, but failed and was eliminated by him. He later faced World Heavyweight Champion Triple H on Raw, but lost.
In 2004, Maven received a major push, even defeating Evolution member Batista. He then took part in an Elimination Match at Survivor Series, but was eventually eliminated by Triple H.
Maven was then given control of Raw for a month, booking himself in a World Heavyweight Championship match against Triple H, who retained the title. Maven later lost a battle royal to determine the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship.
Maven then turned heel, feuding with Shelton Benjamin over the Intercontinental Championship. Despite getting multiple title matches, he was quickly defeated each time. He then formed a tag team with Simon Dean, but the team ended when Dean was traded to SmackDown. Maven was subsequently released by WWE in 2005.
