S.D. Jones trained to become a professional wrestler under Johnny Rodz, and began his career with the NWA Mid-Atlantic under the name “Roosevelt Jones”. Primarily wrestling in tag-team matches throughout various territories, he had many partners, including his cousin, Rufus R. Jones; Porkchop Cash; Tony Atlas; and Andre the Giant.

He also wrestled in singles competition with mixed success; though he is historically noted for losing his 1985 Wrestlemania match against King Kong Bundy in only 9 seconds (a Wrestlemania record that lasted for 30 years). He retired from wrestling in 1991 and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame posthumously in 2019.
