In April 2007, Sheamus earned a developmental contract with WWE after impressing them in tryout matches. He made the decision to move to the United States to pursue his wrestling career. Sheamus spent two years in WWE's developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling, before making his television debut on June 30, 2009, on an episode of ECW.

On November 23, Sheamus won a "break-through" battle royal on Raw, which featured wrestlers who had never won a world championship. This victory earned him the opportunity to challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship. At the TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view on December 13, Sheamus defeated Cena, becoming the first Irish-born WWE Champion.

In February 2010, Sheamus participated in an elimination chamber match at a pay-per-view event. The match included John Cena, Triple H, Kofi Kingston, Ted DiBiase, and Randy Orton, with the WWE Championship on the line. Cena emerged as the winner, ending Sheamus's championship reign.

In June 2010, at the Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view, Sheamus won a fatal four-way match with interference from The Nexus, allowing him to pin John Cena and become the WWE Champion for the second time. He retained the championship by defeating Cena in a steel cage match at Money in the Bank in July, again with help from The Nexus. Sheamus later defended the title against Randy Orton at SummerSlam in August.

However, at Night of Champions in September, Sheamus lost the WWE Championship in a six-pack elimination challenge that involved Chris Jericho, Edge, John Cena, Wade Barrett, and Randy Orton. He had a rematch for the title at Hell in a Cell in October but was defeated by Orton in a Hell in a Cell match.

In 2010, Sheamus also participated in the King of the Ring tournament and won the title of "King Sheamus" by defeating Kofi Kingston and John Morrison. He faced Morrison again in a ladder match at TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs but was unsuccessful in earning a future WWE Championship match.

In 2011, Sheamus won the United States Championship by defeating Daniel Bryan. He had a rematch against Bryan at WrestleMania XXVII, which ended in a draw. Sheamus then moved to the SmackDown brand as part of the 2011 Supplemental Draft and brought the United States Championship with him. However, he lost the title to Kofi Kingston in a Tables match at Extreme Rules.

Sheamus had feuds with various opponents, including Randy Orton, Mark Henry, and Christian. He defeated Christian in several matches and went on a winning streak. In January 2012, Sheamus won the Royal Rumble match, earning a main event championship match at WrestleMania XXVIII.

At WrestleMania XXVIII, Sheamus challenged Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship and won in a record-breaking 18 seconds. He continued to defend the title against opponents like Alberto Del Rio, Chris Jericho, and Randy Orton. Sheamus held the World Heavyweight Championship for 210 days, making it the third-longest reign in the title's history.

Sheamus eventually lost the title to Big Show at Hell in a Cell in October 2012. He had subsequent matches against Big Show but failed to regain the championship. Sheamus also participated in the Royal Rumble match in 2013 but was eliminated by Ryback. He later aligned with Randy Orton to feud with The Shield and had a match against them at WrestleMania 29, which Sheamus and his team lost.
