Ma Hunkel was the middle-aged mother of two kids, who owned a grocery store. Inspired by Green Lantern (Alan Scott), she became the original Red Tornado to face a gang of racketeers.

Ma Hunkel attended the first meeting of the Justice Society of America, but she isn't an official founding member since she left the place early. However, she was made a honorary member.
