The Inner Demons, operating as a criminal Tong, primarily focused on the drug trade, including the smuggling, manufacturing, and street-level sale of drugs such as heroin and the synthetic drug Shade. They were also involved in various other illegal activities, such as protection rackets, illegal gambling, and prostitution.

Throughout their history, the Inner Demons engaged in conflicts with the Maggia crime syndicate, emerging victorious in two wars. In the first war, they decimated the Maggia leadership in New York City using the Dragon-Breath poison, but they were later defeated by Spider-Man in Battery Park. During the Dark Reign period, they faced challenges as Osborn's H.A.M.M.E.R. and Hood's Gang targeted their territory in Chinatown. However, Osborn called off the assault due to the blackmail material possessed by Mr. Negative.

Exploiting the Maggia's leadership vacuum and the ineptitude of Bruno Karnelli, the Inner Demons expanded their influence into Maggia territories and markets. In a subsequent war orchestrated by Mysterio, the Inner Demons emerged as the victors when Mysterio's bomb wiped out the Maggia forces while sparing the Inner Demons.

Following Mr. Negative's arrest and deportation to China, the Inner Demons orchestrated his escape and relocated to Shanghai. They established themselves as a major force in the criminal underworld, particularly through their dominant role in the drug trade, solidifying their power in the region.
