Sam Guthrie is a farmboy who was recruited into the New Mutants, students of the Xavier School who would someday graduate into X-Men. Sam got the codename Cannonball and remained with the New Mutants throughout their changes of teacher, from Xavier to Magneto to Cable, at which point the New Mutants were renamed X-Force and went their own way apart of the X-Men, with Cannonball as leader if Cable was absent. When X-Force returned to the Xavier School, Cable and Xavier agreed that Sam deserved to graduate and became part of the X-Men, but working alongside his idols made him a nervous individual, so after a while he returned to X-Force.
