Red Cloud was one of the greatest Sioux Chiefs. When miners, settlers and the U.S. Army violated the Fort Laramie Treaty, he fought to protect Sioux lands. Although he was famous as a warrior, Red Cloud wanted peace with the whites. In 1870, he and Chief Spotted Tail traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with President Ulysses S. Grant. Red Cloud died in1909 on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota.
