Description:
William Frederick Cody was born in 1846 in Iowa. Lacking formal education, he worked as a wrangler, mounted messenger, gold prospector at the Pike's Peak gold rush and pony express rider by the time he reached 20. During the Civil War, he served on the Union side as a scout in Tennessee and Missouri.

After the war, he hired out as a buffalo hunter, and by his account, killed 4,280 buffaloes in 17 months, that is how he got his nickname "Buffalo Bill". In 1868, he rejoined the army under the command of General Custer.

He organized the wild west exhibition and was its star showman during its many tours around the country. He died in 1917 and was buried in a tomb blasted from solid rock on Lookout Mountain, Colorado.
