Rocky Balboa has earned and kept his title. Now after numerous title matches by boxers attempting to retake the title, Rocky has announced his retirement. In the wake of retirement, arrogant boxer Clubber Lang calls Rocky out and challenges him to a fight. The youthful and more powerful Lang quickly and easily beats Rocky, inadvertently also giving his mentor, Mickey Goodwill a heart attack which kills the old boxer. Rocky depressed but also furious steps down to wallow in despair. In the wake of his defeat however, ex-champion Apollo Creed steps forward and offers to trade Rocky. Deciding that he wants to earn back his title and dignity, Rocky begins new strenuous training and begins counting the days down until his rematch.
