Deluxe Gift Pack (Cloth Capes) (Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring) Review
Deluxe Gift Pack (Cloth Capes) Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring (Toy Biz)This set is rarest of the Fellowship packs, but it’s rarity comes from the only reason to buy it: the softgood cloaks and gandalfs Robe. This set comes with the worst versions of Aragorn, Gandalf and Boromir whilst the rest are pretty average and typical of earlier toybiz lotr figures. The light up staff Gandalf in this version may or may not have the earlier Gandalf heads which look far more like Michael Gambon than Ian Mckellen, the strider Figure is too small with the worst headsculpt and terrible articulation die to his “quick draw sword” play feature which also means his iconic ranger blade is far too small and finally the Boromir in this set is obviously not as good as the later super articulated version, but the face sculpt isn’t terrible nor the detail but he is a bit too buff like old power of the force Star Wars figures and limited in movement with an action feature that is often broken on these figures as he has a button to press that should move both arms in opposite directions and turn his head. Frodo and Sam are the same as the Elven boat figures which I don’t mind as their detailing is usually fine but the likeness for Sam is either going to be ok or baby faced. Merry and Pippin actually have acceptable likenesses but they’re more like the Frodo figure with the barrow blade and plastic hobbit cape from Fellowship a bit more bulky and their swords are softer plastic and a bit rubbery. Legolas is just the first version we got and I did it kind this one much, perhaps a bit too bulky, too tall, missing one dagger sometimes and has action features of cutting but can be posed with a bow, yet has that issue all of his figures have of too big hands so his items get dropped a fair bit. Lastly Gimli is just your typical Gimli so expectations can’t be high as this figure isn’t terrible if you can put up with its lack of movement, sometimes wrong paint colour apps and action features with not enough holsters for his axes (Double head, walking axe and two throwing axes). As stated before the reason to get this set is the capes which once I bought I immediately transferred onto my more articulated figures which I also customized and did a post about called the Fellowship of the Ring. I believe toybiz were a lost relic of actionfigure creators who cares enough to take risks making lots of figures and it paid off allowing them to make more Figure series with better detail and articulation even after the films had ended and taking parts from multiple action figures of the same character allows one to make a perfect rendition of the character with all their acccesories like even Aragorn’s little knife on his scabbard used to clean animals he hunted which is just over the top attention to detail and unessesary to have been made but still appreciated. I realise this is a long review but the overall point is yes you should buy this set if you want a full set of Elven cloaks and a decent cloth robe for Gandalf because the alternative are bulky plastic robes inhibiting movement and posing. Also tsk into account that these sets both the Vinyl and softgoods cloaks are different as with the vinyl ones you get no cloaks with Aragorn Legolas or Gimli, a black cloak with and Elven broach for Borromini, merry and pippin (who has an anoying hood) with hobbit cloaks, Frodo and Sam with Elven cloaks and Gandalf with a horrible large plastic poncho. Also note another reason to transfer Legolas’ cloak is that this Legolas Figure is a pre lothlorien figure meaning he has his Mirkwood shortbow, old arrows and quiver not his Bow if the Galadrim and new quiver and arrows so taking a two towers figure of him instead you can take the quiver off him easily stick it to his back then put the cloak on like this one was intended as there is a hole in the back. Anyway enough geeking out, this set is the one to buy of all the green/red/blue 9 Figure Fellowship packs as it’s only lacking the Peter Jackson other ones have which you can buy on basic cardback. I believe some versions of this set come with both the one ring (cheap plastic on a dog tag necklace) and a nice little map of middle earth which are neat little accessories. So overall it’s literally worth getting for the cloaks and robe and the figures are earlier renditions so they aren’t great and most light up features will have battery acid issues you need to carefully remove from Gandalf but it’s rare the feature even works. So this gets a just over average rating. Hope this helps any curious people decide if they want it or not.
