Sinks Nautilus (Mighty Max) Review
Sinks Nautilus
Mighty Max (Blue Bird)As a kid, I had lots of Mighty Max toys. I had all of the big playsets excluding the Skull Master Mega Head; such as Skull Mountain, Dragon Island, Magus and Terror Talons. I had twelve of the eighteen Doom Zones. I had nine of the smaller Horror Heads and three of the more action figure-like Battle Warriors. Far from a complete collection; but a nice one nonetheless.
But one item I never owned as a kid (nor ever even seen in person until I bought one a couple of weeks or so ago) was the Doom Zone named "Mighty Max Sinks Nautilus". So as an adult; it was one of the first I simply had to get; especially after watching online a couple videos reviewing it.
First off, the exterior. This playset is, of course, a nautilus. Its purple shell with orange dots on the top and red/black cephalopod certainly catches the eye. This playset definitely stands out in any Mighty Max collection. Another way this particular Doom Zone stands out from the others is that it opens like a book; giving you two inner walls as opposed to a back wall and floor like most other Mighty Max toys.
As for the interior; at first glance it looks more like a cave filled with nautical-themed loot than it does a vehicle; but there's definitely a blend of machinery and technical gear once you study it a bit. The interior colors really pop just like the exterior; with plenty of purple, green, orange, blue and others; and is full of sculpted details such as skulls and skeletons, oddly curved ladders, ship wheels and anchors, barrels and other odds and ends; most of them painted, but some of them not.
There aren't too many features or moving parts that are actually built into the interior; aside from a small trap floor, a large tread-like machinery thing and a gun deck with a rotating gun.
As for the mini-figures and removable parts; you get four: Mighty Max of course, Captain Nemo, the Poseidon Beast and the Neptune Trawler. I won't really discuss the Mighty Max mini-figure as you get one with every single playset and sometimes ended up with the same mini-figure/sculpt; it's really the villains and such that come to stand out in the playsets; so I'll move on to Captain Nemo.
To be honest, Captain Nemo is one of my favorite mini-figures in the entire Mighty Max toyline; and was the main driving influence which inspired me to get this pricey Doom Zone at the start of my Mighty Max revival.
In the mini comic on the back of the blister card; Captain Nemo just kind of looks like a jaundiced, somewhat blobby dude with an eyepatch. Not too scary or inspiring. As is often the case concerning differences between the mini comic illustrations and the actual mini-figure; his mini-figure is much better; having Captain Nemo look much more like some toxic ghoul or, more appropriately, a water-logged zombie covered in sea slime, algae and sea weed. His corpse-like sculpt is a real treat with sunken eye sockets and skeletal limbs; painted with various shades of ill-looking greens. He's a cool figurine and could easily be played with and displayed in other sets; such as a zombie in the Doom Zone Grips the Hand or the large Dragon Island playset to name a couple.
As for the Poseidon Beast; it's a little misleading. With a name like that, one could reasonably expect a ferocious monster from the deep depths of the dark sea. It's even sculpted like such; with an opening mouth large enough to engulf Mighty Max (and possibly Captain Nemo as well, I haven't tried). Yet according to the mini comic; it's actually a vehicle which Mighty Max uses to escape the Nautilus just before the destruction of the ship and its ghoulish master. I prefer to think of the Poseidon Beast as an actual monster; but it's entirely up to you!
Last we have the Neptune Trawler. It's a pretty cool piece with a couple skulls sculpted onto it; and like the Poseidon Beast it can be seen from the exterior of the Doom Zone; where the sides of the wheels can be rotated and make up the center of the Nautilus shell.
While this playset lacks the nostalgia drive that I have for many other Mighty Max toys; it's still incredibly fun and is my number one favorite in my small but growing Mighty Max collection.
