Rat King vs. Vernon (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Rat King vs. Vernon
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)NECA's TMNT line has been full of surprises, with the new Lootcrate series up for sale and plenty of more figures coming soon to retailers, including the return of their Mirage figures that started the line. And even better is that the Targets in my state are finally bothering to stock the cartoon two-packs. The most recent two-pack release contains the Rat King, a recurring villain on the show, and quite unexpectedly, Vernon, the cowardly Channel 6 cameraman who's always trying to one-up April.

The box is just like what we've seen with previous two-packs, but they did a nice job with the artwork on the front. Rat King looks menacing while Vernon is appropriately terrified. Everything is held in place with plastic ties, but the accessories are kept in plastic with plastic trays, with the tops kept on with the same ties. It was a lot less stressful to get everything out unlike the Splinter/Baxter set.

I'm going to cover the Rat King first, since he may be the only reason to get this set for some. He stands around 6 1/2" tall, and all of the details are there. The outfit he wears has wraps and stitches all over it, and it's sculpted in a way that provides depth to his appearance. The face has a menacing appearance, appropriate to his character. The paint has some issues, however. It feels pretty chalky, and there's a few areas where it's peeling off, specifically the belt and crotch area. On the bright side, the paint application itself is rather clean, with neatly painted cel shading and black lines.

The Rat King is also very well articulated. He has a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed chest and hips, and rocker/hinge ankles. Everything moved well with no issues, though you'll want to be careful with the hips. If you move them out too far, the paint on the crotch will start to crack and peel, so just avoid going too crazy with them.

There's a great amount of accessories with him. There's three extra hands included, with a pair of tight grips and a pointing right. His bandolier is included and it slides onto him easily, and there's three soda cans that can be held in his right hand or in the bandolier. Three rats are included, with two sculpted to clip onto his arms and one to rest on his shoulders, and the flute he uses to control them. The final Rat King accessory is a mutagen canister, but it's a new one with a removable top to reveal the contents inside.

Now onto Vernon. He stands shorter than the Rat King at around 6 1/4", and he's very accurate in appearance as well. His smug "wise guy" look is captured perfectly here, and his shirt is actually an extra layer of soft plastic covering the body underneath. The paint is done better here than on the Rat King, though there's still some bleed here and there, though it's barely noticeable. He moves well with a ball-jointed neck and head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (double-type), and wrists, a ball-jointed chest hidden inside the shirt (think Baxter), a swivel waist, and the same leg articulation as the Rat King.

The accessories with Vernon are nice and appropriate as well. There's three extra hands with him again, a pair of splayed hands and another pointing right, and a camera with a moving handle. The best inclusions here are actually the alternate "were-rat" head and forearms. This is based off one of the episodes involving the Rat King, where he used mutagen to turn Vernon and Irma into mutant rats to steal all of the cheese in town, and it makes the two being packed together make more sense. Popping off the regular head and forearms is easy to do, though you'll need to heat up the holes on the were-rat parts to get them to fit on the pegs. The head and wrists on the were-rat parts move just like the human parts, and there's a hinged jaw as well to allow for some expression. The wristwatch on the regular left arm slides off as well so you can fit it on the alternate arm.

Overall, aside from a few paint issues, this is a great set. While Splinter/Baxter is my personal favorite, this one is right up there with it. Including were-rat parts for Vernon was a smart move, and I've seen some people get two of these sets just to display both human and rat Vernon. Great job with this set, NECA, now bring on the frogs.
