Foot Soldier (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time) Review
Foot Soldier
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time (Neca)Aside from the classic cartoon and movies, there's one other adaption of TMNT NECA has covered: the classic Konami beat-em-ups. They did the original game years ago with two SDCC-exclusive four-packs, but last year saw them doing the more well-known Turtles on Time. We got two waves of figures last year, but it seems like the video game figures will be taking a break after two more releases next month in favor of Mirage figures, but restocks of the initial figures seem to be on the way as well. Anyways, I'm going to cover my favorite in the line so far, the Foot Soldier.

The packaging is a window box with graphics similar to the original arcade cabinet, with a shot of the figure on the back. It's simple but at the same time very nice looking, not to mention collector-friendly. Once you cut all the tape and twist-ties, everything is easy to remove and put back later.

The Foot Soldier has a pretty decent sculpt, but it isn't fully accurate. It has a human-like head and angry eyes as opposed to the round head and blank stare that its' in-game sprites have, and the clothing on the upper body looks more like just a vest than a vest with a cowl on top, though its' been painted to look like there is a cowl. I included an image comparing the figure to the sprite for further reference.

The reason for these inaccuracies is because he was retooled off of the SDCC figure, which in turn was retooled from the Mirage Foot Soldier from another four-pack. But other than the head and cowl, the rest of the body is accurate, with a more human-like appearance than the lanky Foot Soldiers from the cartoon. The only part of the sculpt changed are the hands, which no longer have any guards on them. The figure stands about 6 3/4" tall, great in scale to the Turtles.

The interesting thing about these figures is that they're painted to resemble the pixel shading from the source material. The paint job is very clean, with little, if any, imperfections. Unlike the first arcade Foot Soldier, the head is not painted with any pixel deco, and the eyes, as opposed to being black with square yellow pupils, are solid yellow. The colors aren't as bold as the game, being more faded in appearance, and the legs should be shaded differently. Other than that, it's well done.

The best aspect of the figure is the articulation, and there's a lot of it. The Foot Soldier has a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, wrists, and hips, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and boots, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed ankles, and hinged toes. Everything moves very well, with no need to heat up most of the joints aside from the wrists. I was pleasantly surprised with how smoothly the shoulders moved, as opposed to how stiff they were on the rest of the wave. The various points of articulation allow for this droid to take all sorts of poses, especially with the accessories.

Moving on to that category, there's a pair of gripping hands to swap out the fists for, a katana, rifle, and a hoverboard with base. The base is a ball-joint that plugs right into the bottom of the hoverboard, allowing it to tilt in all sorts of directions, though it takes a bit of force to get it. The board also a has a peg to stick the Soldier on to help him balance. The inclusion of the weapons are really nice as well, and the double-jointed elbows allow for plenty of poses to be done with them.

The Foot Soldier, aside from the inaccuracies in his appearance, is the nicest figure in the Turtles in Time line so far with all the articulation, clean paint, and great accessories, though the upcoming Baxter Stockman may take the spot from him.
