Sam (Sam & Max) Review
Sam
Sam & Max (Boss Fight Studio)If you've ever heard of Sam & Max, you might know them from their series of point-and-click games, the short-lived animated series, or the original comic book series that spawned the duo. Even if you hadn't heard of them, you probably heard of Boss Fight Studios, who acquired the license to the characters about more than a year ago. The figures of the duo have been out for a while now, and are available through a few comic stores and online retailers. I just got Sam recently, so let's take a look at him.

The figure comes packed in a window box with hanger, and it's adorned with drawings of the duo all around, including a comic on the back that sums up just how nuts their adventures are. The box is also easy to open and collector friendly as well, and everything is held in with a plastic tray, just snip the two pieces of tape holding the top flap on and you're good to go.

Sam's sculpt is very accurate and well-done, with the proper details and wrinkles in his clothing all there. The tie and coat are separate pieces from the body, and are done in a softer plastic. The hat is a separate piece from the head, and it fits on there tightly. Speaking of heads, there's three different ones included here: a smiling head, an "oooo" head, and a snarling head, showing that Sam isn't afraid to bite, or at the most shoot you. The paint is very clean as well, with no bleed or slop at all. Sam stands about 6" tall, or 5 1/2" if you take the hat off.

Sam is very well-articulated with a ball-jointed head, waist, and hips, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and knees, swivel wrists, and swivel/hinge/rocker ankles. The joints move pretty well, but there is some stiffness at the elbows and knees. They'll free up if you work them carefully, but warm water is suggested. The heads do swap easily, though you'll want to warm up the holes in the extra heads to get them to fit on the ball. The lack of swivel/hinge wrists are a bit of a letdown, but that barely limits the amount of poses that can be taken.

Moving onto the accessories, Sam gets three different sets of hands. There's the grips he comes wearing, a pair or relaxed hands, and a pair of fists. The hands swap out easily, and it's always nice to have interchangeable parts. Also included are Sam's comically oversized pistol, a popsicle, and a paper bag puppet of Max. The puppet comes right from the original comics, and has a peg in it so it can fit on either of the arms.

While I know not everyone has heard of Sam & Max, I can assume that those who are fans of the franchise - the games, cartoon, or comics - will want to get these figures. With great sculpts, articulation, and accessories, Boss Fight certainly gave the two some love. Of course, you can't have a Sam without Max, and I'll be picking him up soon.
