King Kong (Skull Island) (King Kong) Review
King Kong (Skull Island)
King Kong (Neca)It’s been a while since I reviewed the King Kong figure by NECA – both its regular and “illustrated” versions – and I loved both. The great detail and articulation definitely won me over on them, and I was eager to see more. Thankfully, two new versions of him dropped around the same time I did my review, “Skull Island” and “Concrete Jungle”, both of which take cues from the original 1930’s flick. Both are pretty much the same figure, but with new interchangeable parts and different accessories for each one. I got the Skull Island version not too long ago, and neither variant (nor the original two) should be too hard to find.

The packaging art is pretty similar to what we got before with Kong, just having photos of the figure all around. That said, the packaging art is mostly black-and-white, owing back to the film. The front tray of the packaging has some plastic ties you need to cut out, but the back tray doesn’t, instead having some more plastic to keep it in place.

The sculpt here is mostly the same as the first Kong NECA did, but the heads are different. The first head is similar to said figure, but now he has a hinged jaw. It’s a great update and it adds some expression to it, but I feel that it throws off his sculpt a bit. The other head is a much fiercer look, with a lowered brow and gritted teeth, and deep scratches on the sides. Frankly, I prefer that head more, not necessarily because there isn’t a jaw hinge to ruin it, but because the expression is really cool. The body sculpt is just as good as before, and so is the paint. He stands around 8” tall, making him pretty big. Sure, it’s not an exact 1/10 version of a twenty-foot-tall ape, you can always get some of those “World’s Smallest” figures by Super Impulse to display with him.

The articulation remains unchanged for this big ape, with a ball-jointed head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles, double swivel/hinge elbows and knees, and swivel biceps and thighs, not to mention the hinged jaw on one of the new heads. Most of it moves well, and the heads are easy to swap out. However, the left bicep was stuck tight in box, and unlike the other two I had, it wouldn’t break free even after I let it “breathe”. So what I did was pour hot water over the stuck area, pop the arm right off the peg, and reattached it. After doing that, it worked just fine. The thigh swivels on mine won’t budge at all, but I don’t feel like risking it.

While the initial Kongs only had interchangeable heads and hands, this one is blessed with more accessories. The closed and grasping hands are still here, but we got a third gripping pair now, and all of them swap easily. Why the gripping hands? Because he comes with a big log to use to fight off the various creatures of Skull Island. Two of said creatures are included here as well, the “pit monster” and a Pteranodon. Both of them have great detail, and also have articulated heads (ball-jointed on the monster and swivel/hinge on the Pteranodon) and hinged jaws. The Pteranodon can’t really stand up due to those small feet, and while it can be done, he won’t stay up for long.

I loved the first King Kong NECA put out, and this new one is a great improvement. While I don’t like the stuck joints and they could’ve hidden the hinged jaw better, everything else is what we should’ve gotten before. I feel that if you already got the first one, then you may not really need this version, but at least get it for the new accessories. I’m still holding out for a full black-and-white repaint, however.
