April O'Neil (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
April O'Neil
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)A new year is here and there’s plenty to look forward to from all the various toy companies, but one I feel I’ll be getting the most from is Super7. Aside from the continuing TMNT and Thundercats ULTIMATES, they got a lot of new licenses coming for 2022, including Transformers, G.I. Joe, Power Rangers, and my personal favorite – Simpsons. As for TMNT, it looks great. We got Scratch, the holy grail of OG Turtle figures, in the sixth wave, as well as the BBTS-exclusive Undercover Raphael and the supe-cool but super-expensive Party Wagon. I already got two current releases – Michelangelo and the recently-released Donatello – on the way from BBTS, but until they arrive, I just got April to keep me satisfied.

The packaging follows the same style as other ULTIMATES figures, with a slipcover over a big, collector-friendly box. There’s not a lot you have to get out to free up the figure and everything – just some tape and a single twist-tie.

Like with the rest of the line, this figure’s sculpt is based off the old Playmates line, and Four Horsemen(?) did a good job recreating that old look. Well, looks, in this case, since there were two different head sculpts for this April back in the day. There’s the brunette head, and the redhead version that was done later to resemble the old cartoon more. Both look good replicated here, but I think that the second head – which is already on her in the box – is a bit wider. The third head is another brunette, but with a headset and open mouth. I feel that it all comes down to which look you prefer, and I prefer the brunette heads.

The body looks pretty good, standing around 6 ½” tall, and it’s a simple appearance, but it’s undeniably that April figure you grew up with. The paint is pretty good as well, especially on the heads. The blue lines painted onto the outfit are clean, but there is a small mark on the left leg. They also made sure to include the “Turtles” emblem on the back, which is a nice touch. My only complaint about the appearance is that she looks glossy, and it makes the figure look kind of off, especially on the skin.

The articulation here isn’t super loaded, but it allows for a good deal of poses. The ball-jointed head offers some good tilt, but it’s only really effective with the brunette heads. The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists move well with no issues, giving you some good display options for holding the microphone and/or camera. I’m not sure if the waist is a swivel or a ball-joint, though. It offers a little tilt, but I’m not sure if it’s supposed to. The legs have swivel/hinge joints at the hips, knees, and ankles, and while the hips and left ankle work fine, the knees are a little tight, but nothing too bad, and the right ankle rocker won’t budge. I had this kind of issue with the S7 Splinter, but that eventually broke free, so I assume that could be the case here as well. There’s also swivel thighs, but they don’t seem to want to budge, and with those itty-bitty hip pegs, I’d rather not risk anything.

The original April didn’t have a lot of accessories, but S7 made sure to include all that and more. There’s the three heads I already mentioned, and they swap easily, as well as four different pairs of hands: closed, gripping, gun grip (vertically-hinged), and open, and those swap easily as well. The camcorder with a concealed gun is back, but it now has a tripod stand, with the two legs being able to move forward. The briefcase is actually a computer, and it’s also from the old figure, but I wish it actually had a hinge, and that there was more detail on it. Other inclusions are a microphone, flashlight, two shurikens, Channel 6 name tag, and two Turtle-Coms (one open, one closed). Finally, and like always, S7 threw in a repo weapons sprue with unpainted weapons. It’s not an exact replica of the old one, but they still like to include them.

Aside from the glossy appearance and stuck joints, I will say that while April isn’t as impressive as everyone else we’ve gotten in the line, she’s still pretty good. Okay, so she’s not a mutant or vigilante or evil supervillain, but April’s a key character in the TMNT universe, and at some point, you’ll want her to join your display, so make sure to grab her before it’s too late. Or S7 does a second one. I wouldn’t mind.
