Dirtbag and Groundchuck Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)The guys over at NECA must really like the “Planet of the Turtleoids” episode of the classic TMNT series, huh? I’m asking that cause this is the third instance of a character from that episode being made into a figure. First it was Kerma as a pack-in with Mondo, then Chrome Dome, and now Dirtbag and Groundchuck. These two were released alongside Wingnut and Screwloose back in November, but were much harder to find. It wasn’t until recently that I was finally able to find them in store. The packaging follows the same style of the other two-packs, but as I mentioned with W&S, the figure images on the sides and back are no longer cropped, and there’s more of an orange-yellow gradient here as well. It’s easy to open and get everything out, but keep in mind there’s a handful of plastic ties to cut when you first open it up. In terms of appearance, I can safely say that Dirtbag and Groundchuck are some of the best sculpts I’ve seen so far in this line, courtesy of Paul Harding. The main reason is because their fur’s been given some texture, adding a bit of realism to their otherwise cartoony appearance and setting them apart from the rest of the line. Besides that, the two are accurate to how they appeared on-screen, and their jaws are hinged as well, opening to show off their teeth and tongues. Dirtbag’s backpack is made of a softer material, and it can open up to fit stuff inside. The paint is pretty well-done, with clean lines and little bleed, the most being around Groundchuck’s chest, but I do wish they’d do the cel shading in another way instead of “paint the back of the figure a darker color.” Dirtbag stands around 6” tall, and Groundchuck is about an extra half-inch taller thanks to his horns. Both figures have about the same amount of articulation, with a ball-jointed head, hinged jaws, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed torso (waist on Dirtbag and chest on Groundchuck), ball-jointed hips, and a ball-jointed tail on Dirtbag. There’s some tightness to the joints, but nothing too serious, and you can get some great poses out of them. Dirtbag’s left bicep was stuck tight at first, so I had to heat it up with hot water and pop it off the joint then reattach it (it worked for my Skull Island Kong, and it worked here). Some of Groundchuck’s joints are a bit limited in range, mainly the head, jaw and ankles, but that’s mainly because of his sculpt. There isn’t a lot of accessories here, but considering how these two only appeared in two episodes, I’m not surprised. Each figure has three sets of hands; a pair of fists, a pair of gripping hands, and a pair of grasping hands, and all of them swap easily. Both get their blasters, with Dirtbag’s being the usual tech style, and Groundchuck’s having a bull theme (makes sense, cause he’s a mutant bull). There’s also a shovel, a drill, and some device (I think it’s Donatello’s). The big thing here is the ring of dirt, and you can pop Dirtbag apart at the waist to make it look like he’s emerging from the ground. I’d suggest heating up the plastic around that area before popping him apart. While I love everything about this set, I feel that the price, $65, is too high. I know that prices have been going up a bit on NECA stuff, and the two each are around average Ultimate price nowadays ($33), I feel that after getting great sets for a reasonable value, charging an extra ten for this set is a bit questionable, but it makes sense with all the new tooling. I just hope this is the only time we’ll have to pay that much for one of these two-packs. But price aside, these two are the some of the best we’ve gotten so far, and I’m looking forward to what we’ll get this year. -3/9/22 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
