Pizza Monster (Another One Bites the Crust) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Pizza Monster (Another One Bites the Crust)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)In the sewers, no one can hear you scream… since you’ll be a couple feet underground, I guess.

Back in a season two episode, the Turtles found themselves facing against giant monsters that Shredder and Baxter created, and they were pretty much Xenomorph copies. This beast was the first of three new TMNT figures to drop as pre-orders on the NECA Store first, and a few months after they all shipped out, they began hitting Target as well.

We got a large box here, around the same size as Chrome Dome’s, and the VHS-inspired artwork on it as great as always. I was half-expecting them to use the same artwork that the old VHS of the episode had, but this is a little better. Everything’s held in by those damn plastic ties, though, so get your scissors ready.

The sculpt on the Pizza Monster may be my favorite one from the line so far. It’s a huge figure, standing around 8 ½” tall. They were larger in-show, but I imagine NECA didn’t want to make them like 12-15” tall. I love the work on the head, with a hinged jaw that looks great opened or closed. The rest of the body has some nice musculature brought out by the painted lines, and the tail is so long (5 ½”) that it’s a separate piece, not that that’s unusual for this line. The paint is done well aside from some yellowing on the claws.

There’s plenty of articulation with this figure, those there is one really bothersome area. The ball-jointed head/neck combo allows for plenty of motion, and you can get some tilt of out the chest as well. The swivel/hinge joints in the shoulders, elbows (double-jointed), and wrists allow for plenty of arm poses, and the type of elbows used here work well. As for the legs, we have ball-socket hips, swivel thighs, swivel/hinge upper knees and ankles, and hinged lower knees. The tail has a bendable wire inside of it, and it connects to the body on a ball joint.

While it is a lot of articulation, the hinges aren’t the tight parts here, but rather the swivels. For some reason, NECA made just about every swivel a ratcheting joint. While it works fine in most areas, it’s what prevents the ankles from swiveling. First time I got this figure, the left ankle snapped when I tried to break it free, and the other one did turn, but that eventually broke as well. This one has the same issue, but I’m not going to risk any breakage this time around. That aside, you can get some nice poses out of the figure overall.

There’s not a lot of accessories included here, but it all fits well with the character. The baby pizza monster looks adorably ferocious, with clean paint on the eyes and teeth. The pizza box is a much cooler accessory though, mainly because it can open and close, and the included pizza is nice as well. Finally, we got what appears to be a little tracking device. I don’t think this was from the same episode, but it’s still nice regardless.

The Pizza Monster is a solid figure, but the joint issues (especially the ankles) weigh him down a bit. I was glad to see him again at Target to replace my broken one, and he’ll make a good army builder for your display.
