Antrax and Scumbug (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Antrax and Scumbug
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)They want more than crumbs…

The old cartoon made sure to work in almost every character that appeared in the original toy line, even if some only appeared for a single episode. Amongst the one-offs included the insects Antrax and Scumbug, who only appeared in season 7’s “Night of the Rogues”, joining the turtles’ other past foes to take them down, even though they never fought them before (or at we didn’t see them fight for the first time). Still, NECA did them. We got Ace, who only had a few seconds of screentime in the show, as a figure, so I think anyone’s possible by this point.

The box is pretty much the same as the rest of the line, so why bring it up here? Because behind the plastic tray where everything’s in, there’s another tray that has… nothing? I guess they included it to support the box more, but I don’t really see any reason to have it. There’re also more plastic ties to snip than we should.

Antrax in the cartoon didn’t look all that much different from Antrax in the toy line, with very minor changes. His second time in plastic is a good replication of his 2D appearance, and arguably looks nicer than the old toy. The big grimace on his face is also pretty similar, but the eyes aren’t as weird. Being a giant ant, Antrax has four arms rather than two, all sculpted with gripping hands for his weapons. The belt with knife holster on the back is soft plastic so it doesn’t interfere with the articulation. Only real issue with mine is that they didn’t glue the belt buckle on right, but other than that, he looks great. The paint is the usual toon style with cel-shading and outlines, all of which are pretty clean. Antrax stands around 7” tall, and he’s a lot taller than he sounds.

Antrax may have earned himself some of the nicest articulation in the line. The head is a ball-joint with plenty of up-and-down tilt, and the antennae and feelers all swivel as well. The arms have swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps, and double-hinged elbows, and keep in mind he has four of them, giving you plenty of posing opportunities with his arsenal. The ball-jointed chest is somewhat restricted in its turning, but it has plenty of crunch. Below that are a swivel waist and thighs, ball-jointed tail, ball-socket hips, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. He had no stuck joints, a rarity for this line, but the wrists swivels aren’t super strong, and the hips tend to pop out at times.

The original Antrax figure had an axe, a spiked club, and a ball and chain. NECA’s version doesn’t have the last one, but the axe (without noose this time around) and club are here again, and he also gets a dagger and big knife with spiked hand guard (seriously, what is that thing called?) It takes some work to get the weapons in his hands, but you’ll have plenty of ways to display him with them. What I really wish he had was interchangeable hands. The original promo image showed him with different hands on his upper arms (open right and closed left), and while I can see why they decided to change it, I still wish we had the option of extra hands.

Next, we have Scumbug, who much like his partner in crime, doesn’t look too much different from his Playmates counterpart. Unlike Antrax, I actually have the original Scumbug figure, and I can tell that not much changed between old and new. The real difference is that the “bug pack” (what Playmates called it) is permanently sculpted onto his back, rather than being a separate piece. The hoses are soft plastic, of course, and you can pop off the hose connecting the gun to the pack and put it on either side. Like the old figure, the mouth opens and closes, but it actually stays posed rather than being a loose piece. The paint is just as clean as Antrax’s, and Scumbug stands around 6 ¼” tall, smaller than his friend. The articulation on him is not too much different from the giant ant, aside from no tail articulation (since he doesn’t have one), only one pair of arms, less tilt in the head, and the chest having more back tilt than forward.

As for accessories, I suppose you can count Scumbug’s gun as one since you can detach it from him. He also gets three cockroaches, a taser-looking thing (I think it was a net gun), and some weird device I don’t remember. Like Antrax, I would’ve loved to get extra hands for him, especially considering how this set cost $65 (was hoping I’d never pay that much for a two-pack again since Dirtbag and Groundchuck).

That price is a bit of a setback, but other than that and the lack of extra hands, this is a pretty fun set. Knowing we’re close to recreating “Night of the Rogues” is great, too, now that we got Zach coming later this year. But when the shell are we getting Tempestra?
