Style Guide Colors (4-Pack) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Style Guide Colors (4-Pack)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Given how all the TMNT cartoon pre-orders on the NECA Store seemingly won’t be shipped out until Q4 this year, we got ourselves a bit of a break from that sub-line. We still have some stuff lingering at Target to pick up, though, such as a new four-pack. A couple fans have asked NECA if the “style guide” turtles would be coming back, and they honored their wishes with not two two-packs, but a single set. It’s been showing up in surprisingly large amounts, and I’ve had more luck seeing it in stores than the Turtles in Disguise set, which I’ve never seen at retail.

Speaking of which, you know how that set had a fifth panel box with awesome artwork? The box for this set isn’t like that. It’s a long window box with the same design cues that the two-packs have, but we at least got some nice photos on the back and sides. There’s also only one plastic tray instead of two, but at least you don’t have a lot of tape and plastic ties to deal with here.

The sculpts here are the same as the Turtles in Disguise set, including the two-piece heads with swappable eyes and mouths. There’s a set of happy eyes and a set of angry ones for each turtle, and two of each mouth sculpt. The real difference here is the color scheme. The turtles are colored here how they usually appear on merchandise, hence the term “style guide”. The colors are much brighter than how they look in the show, and their belt buckles are black and white. They also lack cel-shading, but they still retain the painted outlines. They also have a matte finish compared to the semi-gloss the Disguise set had, which is a plus. Overall, the paint is mostly clean, but Donatello has some yellow marks on the back of his right leg, and Raphael has some minor white marks on his back. All four turtles stand 5 ½” tall, fitting in NECA’s usual 7-inch scale.

Same sculpts, so same articulation. All four turtles have a ball-jointed head/neck combo, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists (vertical hinges for Leo and Raph, horizontal for Don and Mike), ankles, and bandana ties, swivel biceps and thighs, ball-jointed chest, ball-socket hips, and double-hinged knees. You can get them into plenty of poses, and the alternate parts swap easily, but the elbows and wrists required heat to get moving like always.

There isn’t a big amount of accessories like the Disguise set, but it’s all the necessities for the turtles. Four extra pairs of hands – chopping, pointing, sai gripping, and thumbs up – are all included (thankfully no busted joints this time), and as mentioned above, they swap easily. The turtles also get their signature weapons; Leo’s swords, Don’s bo staff, Raph’s sai, and Mike’s nunchucks, as well as the turtle shell grappling hook Mike starts using instead of his nunchucks after the first few seasons. The spinning nunchuck effect, which is useful for more dynamic shots with Michelangelo, and the pizza slice that slides onto Raphael’s sai are back, and I’m glad to see them after they were excluded from the other four-pack. Rounding things out are four turtle coms (two open, two closed), a mutagen canister, and two pizza boxes (sculpted permanently open). I wish the paper extras from the initial two-packs were included here, and it would’ve made me feel a bit better about the price increase.

What price increase, you ask? This set is $150 at Target, $25 more than the Disguise four-pack, and while the Channel 6 set was the same price as this, it at least had a bit more accessories to justify the price. I felt like this set should have been the same price as the Disguise set, if not a little bit less (or more). NECA has been raising their prices a little bit as of late, so I guess this was inevitable, but I wish was less than they put it out for.

All in all, if you missed out on the style guide two-packs or the Disguise set, I’d suggest getting this. It’s a nice little piece if you just want the turtles from this line, but if you want more goodies and show-accurate shading, the other four-pack may be more up your alley. I have both anyways, because I am not at all good with finances.
