Sewer Surfer Mike (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Sewer Surfer Mike
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)It may be autumn, but this guy's still ready for the beach. While both waves 5 and 6 of TMNT Ultimates are here, I've been hearing of quality issues in the former that are holding me off from buying them, so wave 6 is my main focus. And with it is another Michelangelo, this time based off a variant of him from the first years of the original line.

The 1990's Sewer Surfer Mike had a big grin on his face and sunglasses, and that expression is included here, but his default head is a new expression, with a wide open mouth and his tongue hanging out. The sunglasses are a separate piece, rather than being sculpted onto his face. Both heads look great, and the best part is that the skin tone is the same as the regular Mikey, so you can use the heads here on that figure if you wish.

Standing 6" tall, this version of the party dude is dressed in a wetsuit, and also sports a watch, belt, flippers, and tons of crap on him. He's got sharks, barnacles, crabs, seaweed… basically everything you'd find in the ocean. The colors are notably different from the original, with the wetsuit having a lighter color, the lime-colored parts becoming yellow, and the flippers being blue and green. Plus all the details that weren't painted on the original are fully colored here, so now you can make out what everything is. While the paint is mostly clean, I prefer the more neon colors of the original, and some more colors on the belt would be nice.

The articulation isn't any different from the regular turtles, and Surfer Mikey moves just as well as them. He has a ball-jointed head that doesn't have a huge amount of range, but just enough to look all around The swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, along with bicep swivels, allow for nice arm poses, but the wrists are pretty tight, so soak them in hot water or whatever method you use to soften plastic to let them move. The ball-jointed waist moves a lot better than I expected, with plenty of tilt to it. Lastly, there's swivel/hinge hips, knees, and ankles, as well as swivel thighs. He can manage some good poses, but some sculpted areas, such as the seaweed on his right shoulder and eel on his left thigh, can restrict movement a bit.

Mikey has plenty of extras, and they allow for many display options. The alternate head is nice, though swapping them can be somewhat difficult, cause those things are on tight. The usual turtle hand options are here, including horizontal gripping, vertical gripping, fists, and grasping, and these ones have thicker pegs than usual, which is a nice improvement. There's also the aforementioned sunglasses, which fit fine on either head.

Carried over from the old figure are the surfboard, water wheel, and crab, and while the wheel and crab cannot be attached to the board or Mikey's foot this time, the surfboard now has an ankle cuff attached to an elastic string, but the board still has foot pegs for stability. There are new things as well, such as a pair of nunchucks covered in seaweed, and made out of a very soft plastic so they can fit in the loops on his belt or have one be held in both hands for cool poses. He also now has a second water wheel, as well as three things of what are supposed to be turtle wax (get it?). Lastly, there's an unpainted weapons sprue, and while those are unless hunks of plastic, I can at least give Super7 credit for the creative design.

Surfer Mikey is definitely a great figure, and he matches up with Slash in terms of quality. Sure, there a few nits, but there's enough fun factor in him to make him a worth addition to your collection. While S7 threw a curveball doing Punk Rock Donatello instead of his undercover version, I definitely hope we can get that design at some point to go with this guy and complete the disguised turtles.
