Sealab 2021 (Debbie Dupree / Dr. Quentin Q. Quinn) Adult Swim (Palisades)Before creating FX's immensely popular Archer, Adam Reed and Matt Thompson created a little show for Adult Swim called Sealab 2021. It did what Space Ghost Coast to Coast prior; take a Hanna-Barbera cartoon and spin it into a off-the-wall adult comedy. In the mid-2000s, it, along with a few other Adult Swim series, got the opportunity to enter the action figure world thanks to the sadly defunct Palisades Toys. The packaging is simple, but nice. It's mostly black, resembling Adult Swim's traditional bumpers, along with a background relating to the show on the front of the paper insert. However, it's also a clamshell package, meaning you'll need an exacto-knife to get it open. At least the packaging helps protect the contents inside. The unique thing about the Adult Swim line was that the figures were released in two-packs, and making up half of this set is Dr. Quinn, one of the few sane people on Sealab (at least until season 3). He, along with everything else here, was sculpted by Big Chief Studios, whoever that was. His head is very off, though, with the chin being too small and the hair not being shaped correctly. The rest of the figure looks nice, though, with the suit looking accurate to the show. At 5" tall, Quinn isn't super tall, and I'm not sure what other lines he's supposed to fit in. The other half of this set is Debbie, and she looks a lot better than Quinn. While the hair could use some touching up, her face is pretty spot-on, but I imagine it was hard to translate these characters to three dimensions when they're always viewed from a 3/4 profile. At 4 3/4" tall, she's a little smaller than Quinn, and suffers from a tilted left foot that somewhat throws off her balance. Both figures get very nice paint, with clean work for the hair and eyes. However, there is some bleeding around the shoulders on both and Quinn's feet, and his skin tone should be a little darker. The articulation on Palisades figures ranges from bare-bones to amazing, and these lean a bit more towards the "bare-bones" category. Both figures get a swivel neck, and I wish they had a ball-joint there instead so they could look up and down. The arms are decent, with swivel shoulders and wrists, along with hinged elbows, and their movement fits with the show's animation. Then there's a swivel waist, along with different types of swivel hips: Quinn gets a T-crotch, while Debbie has one of those V-crotches I hate so much. The legs are another area where articulation could've been improved, as hinged knees would have increased the number of poses they can take. To round out the figures are a couple nice accessories, starting with three whiskey bottles, each with unique paint and stickers, along with a soda can and a shot glass. Quinn is the only figure with a hand sculpted to hold anything, and even then, the shot glass is the only thing he can hold, rendering everything else pointless. The dolphin is my favorite extra, being made out of a softer material, and fits with the underwater setting of the show. There's also a funky-looking TV and camera, the latter of which has a moving handle, and the biological clock from "Chickmate." Lastly, there's two display stands to go with the figures, but neither really need it. Even though Palisades was only able to put out one wave of figures in the Adult Swim line before going under, they did a good job with these two. Granted, a lot of improvements could've been done, such as a better head for Quinn, more articulation, and the ability to hold their accessories, but they're still a decent set that is thankfully still pretty cheap nowadays. It's a shame Palisades couldn't get the second wave out before its demise, because Captain Murphy and Sparks would've been great. - 2/8/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
