Renet (Brown Clothes) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)The return of NECA's TMNT Mirage line feels like a blast from the past, adding on to figures that were released many years ago, so it makes sense that a time traveler joins the line. The plucky apprentice Renet, as far as I'm concerned, appeared in only the eighth issue of the comic, which for some reason had fellow indie comic character Cerebus the Aardvark. Renet's sculpt is done by Jon Matthews, and her head is very accurate to how she appeared in-print. The default head has a neutral expression, and her cowl pulled up to cover her forehead. Her funky headwear, with a clock in the middle, is a separate piece, and it fits on pretty firmly most of the time. She gets an alternate head without the cowl, revealing her tomboyish hair underneath, and making her a bit more expressive. The paint on both heads is nice, with clean lines and nice shading on the hair, though the left eye on the alternate head is misaligned, throwing off her appearance. Standing around 6" tall, Renet is notably thicker than how she usually appears. I guess being out of the spotlight for a couple years does that to you. Nevertheless, her outfit is spot-on, with the weird clock-covered leotard and a cool fabric cape with a wire running through it, allowing you to pose it flowing with the wind. The body gets pretty clean paint, with all the little clocks looking very nice, but just one thing: she's dressed in red and brown instead of blue. I'm guessing this was a licensor thing, as these are the colors she's given in IDW's colored versions of the original comics. NECA continues to provide their Turtle figures with great articulation, as Renet gets a ball-jointed head and chest, both with decent amounts of tilt, along with swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-socket hips. She has minimal trouble standing up, and the double-jointed elbows allow for great poses with her accessories. However, all the double-hinge joints were pretty tight at first, with the elbows in particular feeling pretty gummy, and the biceps were stuck as well. Some time in the freezer helped free up her movement, thankfully. Renet is provided with a handful of interchangeable parts to change up her look, starting with the removable headwear and the unhooded head, along with a cowl piece that's meant to go with the latter, fitting around the neck. While Renet's alternate head pops on easily, I would recommend heating it up before popping it on, so that when you pop it off, the barbell joint doesn't go with it. She also has three pairs of hands: relaxed, gripping, and closed. It does take a bit of effort to pop them out, and the soft plastic used for hands has me worried that the joints could rip out someday (it's first movie Turtles all over again). I'd advise you to work them out slowly to reduce any risk. There's also a handful of accessories that fit with the character. Her time scepter is the most important item, and it looks very nice in her hands. There's also a dagger for her to defend herself, and one of the scrolls, which were key items in her debut issue. Lastly, there's the spectral head of Lord Simultaneous, with a fierce roaring expression. I like the use of translucent plastic, and it's even designed to pop onto Renet's body. Just think about how goofy that'll look for a second. One question I suppose you're asking is "will NECA do a Renet with her proper blue colors?” And yes, they have, but it's through this thing they're doing with Walmart called AutoT. You buy the codes in-store, type it up online, and you can have the figure stored in "digital vault" to shipped directly to you. It's sort of a weird concept, but I appreciate NECA finding a unique way to get special variants out there. I haven't tried to get the blue Renet yet, though, and I think the colors on that version are too bright. I'm not sure you can call Renet a real deep-cut since she wasn't exclusive to the Mirage comics (I know she was in the 2003 and 2012 series), but she's not a character that first comes to mind when someone brings up the franchise. While not the first transition into plastic she's gotten, this is Renet's first true action figure, and I'm glad her time has come. While I doubt we'll get a Cerebus because that would require additional licensing, I would like a Savanti Romero to go along with her, and the true Lord Simultaneous to go with him. - 2/12/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
