Invisible Man (H.G. Wells) (Universal Monsters (Neca)) Review
Invisible Man (H.G. Wells)
Universal Monsters (Neca) (Neca)It's been a while since I've gotten one of NECA's Universal Monsters figures, and the latest addition to my collection is the Invisible Man. When I first saw the film, I knew it'd tie with Frankenstein for my favorite Universal Monsters flick, thanks to Claude Rains' great portrayal of Dr. Jack Griffin, the invisible man himself, being able to capture his descent into madness with equal parts horror and comedy.

Following the trend of previous releases in this line, the Invisible Man's packaging consists of the film's poster on the front, and a collage of figure photos on the back. Also as per usual, you can flip open the flap on the front to reveal the figure and everything it comes with. There are a few ties to snip out to get the figure itself out, but at least there isn't a whole lot to deal with.

As mentioned above, Dr. Griffin was played by Claude Rains in the film, but up until the end, the mad doctor was invisible, having bandages cover his head at first. Because of this, NECA doesn't have to worry about securing any actor likeness rights this time. The default head is covered fully in bandages, wearing goggles and a prosthetic nose, and bits of hair poking through the wraps. There are two other heads, one without the goggles and nose, along with a small hole in the wraps to suggest a mouth, and another with no goggles and the bottom half of his head uncovered, being held up by a piece that securely hides in the collar of the suit. All three heads are nice options that match different looks in the film, and the paint is good as well, with mostly clean edges and nice wash on the bandages.

Standing approximately 7" tall, Dr. Griffin is dressed up in a coat with gloves, tie, and long pants, something different from the iconic robe look. The coat is a separate overlay on the torso made out of a softer plastic, so that articulation can be implemented underneath it. The figure was sculpted by Ray Santoleri, and it's not hard to tell he did a great job. Unlike how he appeared on-screen, Griffin is fully colored in plastic form, and I like the colors they chose. The paint is mostly good, but there is a lot of bleed around the stuff in his pocket.

There's plenty of articulation on this guy, and it's a lot like what I've seen with previous releases. The ball-jointed head and neck combo works great, but only the default portrait has independent motion in the head. The swivel/hinge joints in the shoulders, elbows, and wrists allow for plenty of arm poses, and the elbows bend deeper than I thought. The chest and waist underneath the coat are also ball-joints, but the waist works the best out of the two. Lastly, there's the usual leg movement, with ball/socket hips, swivel thighs, and swivel/hinge knees and ankles. All of the joints work great, but there was a slight bit of tightness to the wrists at first.

There's a nice selection of accessories included, and all make sense with the character. Having three different heads is nice, and they all swap with no hassle. Seven hands are including, with a pair of closed hands, a pair of open hands, a wide gripping right, and a pair of hands with brown gloves on. They swap easily as well, and I noticed that the brown right is sculpted with a tight grip, yet there's nothing in here for it to hold. Hmmm… There's also his wig, goggles, and nose as separate pieces, and since the nose is so small, two extra ones are included, being stored in a small baggie taped to the back of the tray. There's also the glass of invisibility potion with straw, and a book with a lot of equations written inside it. The back of the box lists a bottle as part of the accessories, but nothing of the sort is included here.

The Invisible Man is further proof why NECA's Universal Monsters line is one of their best, with great quality in the sculpt and joints, along with a nice selection of accessories. The paint could have been a little cleaner, but that's my only nit. There's been a couple accessory sets for other releases in the line, and I hope this guy gets one as well; there's plenty more they could give him.
