Shredder Clones (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics) Review
Shredder Clones
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mirage Comics (Neca)It's Shredder! Er… Shredders.

In the original Mirage TMNT comics, the three-part "Return to New York" arc saw the four turtles returning to their home to defeat the Shredder once and for all, but standing in their way were three inhuman Shredder clones. One of the clones, which had big claws for hands, was done a while back as a figure by NECA as part of the second (and more than likely last) series of Lootcrates. The other two, thankfully, are a regular release, showing up at Target first before hitting everywhere else.

Yes, this release includes two clones in one, so I'll start with the big guy. This clone has a chunky upper body with a squat head, but it also has four arms rather than two. The figure stands an average height of 7" tall, and is sculpted by someone whose name we haven't heard before on this line: May Thamtarana. He definitely deserves credit for such a great sculpt, looking dead-on to how this freak appeared in the comic. The sculpt is brought out further by the paintwork, with clean, thick lines adding to the comic feel, and a shiny metallic color on the armor. The only area of error is the back of the belt, which has a small bit of bleed and a barely noticeable gray mark.

The big guy has almost all of the articulation you can ask for, starting with a great ball-jointed head/neck combo, allowing it to look all around. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps and forearms, and double-hinged elbows, and keep in mind there's four arms, allowing for many poses. There's no movement on the torso, just a waist swivel, and the legs are the same ol' with ball-socket hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. Aside from the two right hands, none of the joints needed hot water to get moving, which is a huge plus given how these figures tend to have stuck joints.

There is a neat gimmick with this figure that is the reason for the forearm swivels. In the source material, Leonardo cut off one of the clone's arms, revealing its insides to be a bunch of worms. All of the forearms on the figure can be popped on and off with ease, and they fit tight. The two pink worm pieces plug into both ends, but they only go with one arm at a time. The figure also gets four pairs of hands: closed, gripping, grasping, and flat palm. Each pair of hands can only accompany two arms, so if you want all of the arms to have the same hand pose, you'll need to buy a second figure.

Speaking of second figures, the smaller Shredder clone is packed in here. The little guy has longer blades on the hands, and a rather weird head shape, but like the larger figure, it's accurate to the comic. The figure stands around 3" tall, and its small limbs mean not much articulation could be fit onto it. Still, it gets a ball-jointed head, ball-socket shoulders and hips, swivel waist and thighs, and swivel/hinge angles, and the preposed arms and legs help with its overall appearance.

While the figure is great, there are two issues I have with it. One is the price; the set is $40 at Target, but everywhere else wants around $50, even $60, for it. I ended up having to pay the higher price, mainly because it's impossible to find at Target. The other issue is that if you don't already have the Lootcrate Claw Shredder, you'll have to pay secondary market prices for it, which thankfully don't seem to be too high. On the bright side, Best But recently put up a pre-order for a three pack of all three clones with different colors, so there's that at least. Other than that, there's very little wrong with the figure itself; it just needed a few extra hands.
