Sergeant Woolly Pullover (Barnyard Commandos (Premium DNA)) Review
Sergeant Woolly Pullover
Barnyard Commandos (Premium DNA) (Premium DNA)The early 90s were a time for many unusual and creative toy lines, such as Barnyard Commandos. Playmates' line of armed sheep and pigs seemingly attempted to branch out into a phenomenon, given that it got kid's meal toys and a cartoon (although only 1/3 of the show made it to the States). It looks like it finally paid off, because Premium DNA, the same company behind those awesome Madballs from last year, are bringing them back with a new line that meets modern standards. While I've been eyeing the figures for a bit, it wasn't until Big Bad Toy Store offered the whole first wave for half-price that I jumped on-board.

The packaging is very similar to Madballs, as it's a big box with a slip cover over it. The cover has nice artwork, and it actually displays the character name, making them easier to tell apart with the cover on. The box underneath has a character bio on the back, and only a few pieces of tape need to be removed to get everything out.

BC creator James Groman was involved with the designs for the new figures, but Brodie Perkins did the sculpting. The end result is a figure that looks faithful to the original while adding a bit of modern flair. Sgt. Wooly Pullover's head bears a large set of gritted teeth and a wild-eyed stare, and it's basically the original toy's expression but exaggerated. He's got a headband tied around the top of his head, suggesting a Rambo look, and there is something with the figure that adds on to that similarity, but I'll go over that later. There are two new details on the body that the original figure didn't have: rank symbols on his upper arms and a bandolier around his body. The bandolier is removable, but you'll have to pop off his head to do so.

While in a 6" scale, Wooly stands at 5" tall, likely due to his squat legs, because sheep can be big animals. Still, he's a solid, chunky figure that feels nice in hand. The paint is pretty good, and has both its positives and negatives. On the positive side, the colors are nice, and the wool gets some wash to it for a more realistic look. On the negative side, there are some fuzzy edges along with a couple small marks here and there. Still, the end product looks nice overall, with all the detail you'd expect out of a modern action figure.

The original Barnyard Commando toys had no articulation whatsoever, being just solid pieces. With the new line, the characters are now outfitted with "tactical farmticulation." Wooly gets a barbell-jointed head with nice range, being able to hunch forward well. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders and elbows, but the wrists only swivel, due to the fact that his hands are hooves, and the elbows don't get much bend. The waist is another barbell joint that moves well, but is a little restricted. Adding on to that are swivel/hinge hips, hocks (not knees), and tail, along with ball-jointed ankles. Most of the joints move fine, but there are some leg joints that needed hot water to free up, and like to pop apart, not to mention an ankle that doesn't want to plug in all the way on the ball.

Now onto the best part of these figures: the accessories. The original Wooly had a bazooka, and so does this one, but now it's called a "B'attling Gatling Gun." It's a solid hunk of plastic that plugs into his back with some force, and this one sports a more realistic paint job compared to before. That's all the original had, but the new one gets more. Wooly now gets a compound bow, along with an extra set of hands designed for the bow to plug in to. There's a milk can quiver that plugs into his back, with three arrows that can go inside it or clips onto the bow. Each of the arrows has a unique tip: one has a carrot, one has corn, and one has an unfortunate chicken tied to it. Lastly, there's four eggs that go in the bandolier, but you will have to heat up the bandolier to get them in, not to mention the paint rub-off issue.

Wooly's a decent figure overall; he looks great and gets some nice accessories, plus he can actually pose unlike his Playmates counterpart, but he suffers from a few joint issues, with some either liking to pop off or not plug in all the way. If those problems weren't there, he'd be a more solid figure, but he's still something crazy and unique that stands out from all the more well-known licenses in the figure world today.
