Private Side O'Bacon Barnyard Commandos (Premium DNA) (Premium DNA)If you guys aren't reading Toycollectr, the third issue has a nice article on Barnyard Commandos, covering its conception, failure, unused ideas, and eventual revival by Premium DNA. Speaking of which, they also reveal the wave 2 line-up in said article, but there doesn't seem to be any plans to put it up for pre-order any time soon. For now, we have only the first wave and its Stealth Ops variants. Private Side O'Bacon, like everyone else in the line, is sculpted by Brodie Perkins using designs by Andrew Cramer and James Groman. He's also one pig you don't want to mess with, given his fierce grimace, tusks, and nose ring. His whole head is covered in mud, with some of it spreading onto his back and little spots on the rest of his body. Compared to the original, his skin isn't as pink, instead being more of a pale tan. The paint is clean, but there are a few areas of fuzziness and slight clumping. In the Toycollectr article, Premium DNA stated they wanted the new figures to feel how the originals did when kids had them: big. The old toys were only around 3" in scale, but DNA's line aims to place them in 1/12 scale. O'Bacon stands about 3 1/2" tall, and is 5 1/2" from snout to rear. I'd say that's a pretty good size for a pig in this scale, considering how big they can get in reality. This guy's also very chunky and heavy, moreso than Wooly or any of the other figures. Needless to say, I'm amazed by the size and heft of this guy in-hand. The original O'Bacon was a solid piece of vinyl sculpted in a walking pose, but the new version is not only plastic, but fully articulated. He gets a barbell head, waist, and front pasterns, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (knees), hips, and hocks, swivel thighs, and ball-jointed rear pasterns. It's mostly good, but the range on the head is quite limited. The hinges are pretty tight, and they feel like ratcheting joints, but they're not tight enough that you risk anything while moving them. I thought the hock joints looked awkward when I saw video reviews of these figures, but in-person, they aren't too bad, and are very useful as well. There aren't much accessories with O'Bacon, but he gets two big items. One of which is his "450F LMB-RST" flamethrower, which plugs into his back. The original toy had this, but here it's much more realistic and detailed. There's also two different safety goggles - one see-through and one solid yellow. Solicitations for the figure mentioned a plug-in flame effect, but it's not included. Kind of a shame, since it would've made him so much cooler. The remaining extra is a hay bale, and while it's nothing more than a big, hollow hunk of plastic, it can help spice up your display a bit. Overall, Private Side O'Bacon is one heck of a good figure. He's hefty, moves well, and gets some cool accessories. I also want to take the time to give a shout-out to Big Bad Toy Store. When I picked up the set of four from them, I received an O'Bacon with a damaged plastic tray and two left shoulders. I contacted them about a replacement, and they were very nice and helpful. Thanks guys! - 7/16/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
