Bugman and Electrozapper Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)How do you know when a line runs deep? When it starts incorporating characters you don't recall ever hearing of. NECA's TMNT toon line has been doing that for a while now, putting out characters that only appeared once or twice in the show, alongside accessories nobody remembers. One of the latest releases is an example of such, with two very minor characters from the show, but one of which is at least remembered. The "remembered" character in this case is Brick Bradley, a.k.a. Bugman, who I've been wanting in the line for some time now. Unsurprisingly, they went with his half-insect form for the figure. Sculpted by Tim Miller, Bugman has a really freaky head sculpt, with big red eyes, antennae, and mandibles in place of a regular human mouth. The hair style is very funky-looking, due to it being that kind of design that works better in 2D than 3D, but they managed to make it look decent enough. There are some slightly visible mold lines on the head, but nothing you'll notice unless you look closely. At 7" tall not including antennae, Bugman wears his usual green super hero outfit, and his body bears just as many bug aspects as the head, including extra arms on his shoulders, two-toed feet, and wings and tail on the back. It's very accurate to how he looked in the show, and there's nice paint work as well. Granted, there are some fuzzy lines and edges, and they didn't do the shading (in typical "make the back a darker color" style) on the skin tone, but it looks nice. If you're an articulation junkie, then good news, Bugman is loaded with joints. The barbell head and neck combo works nice, allowing him to look all around. The arms get swivel/hinge shoulders and wrists, swivel biceps and forearms, and double-hinged elbows; all of them work great, but the shoulders are a bit restricted due to the bug arms. The barbell chest has some nice tilt and lean, and before it are swivel waist, thighs, and shins, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and swivel/hinge ankles. The bug parts get some movement as well, with swivel bug arms, swivel/hinge wings, a barbell at the base of the tail, and three swivels on the tail. The joints in the tail are very well-hidden, and I had no idea they were there at first. All of the joints move great, with no tightness at all. Complementing Bugman is one of his various foes: Electrozapper. He's a character many went "huh?" at due to him being an oft-forgotten one-shot, but he makes the most sense to include with Bugman. Although he's not as freaky-looking as Bugman, he's still a gremlin-looking guy with a round head and big mouth, setting him apart from other humans in the show. He gets two heads unlike Bugman - one neutral, and one with an open mouth and angrier expression. His sculpt was provided by Tomasz Rozejowski, the same guy who did that really nice April we got recently. A little shorter than his rival at 6 1/4" tall, Electrozapper's outfit is cheesier than Bugman's, being mostly red with a battery symbol on the front, along with a cape and hourglass figure. While the sculpt are paint are nice, I have two issues with his appearance. One is that the parts that are a slightly bluish gray should have more of a purple tint to them, like on the box art. The other is that his cape isn't wired, and while it doesn't need to, I wish it was for cool displays. Electrozapper gets similar articulation to Bugman, but with no neck or shin joints. He does have a chest joint, but it's hidden under the suit, and it works surprisingly well. When it comes to accessories, Bugman seemingly got the short end of the stick. He gets three sets of hands - closed, gripping, and gun grip - all reused from Dirk Savage, along with a hunk of Leestanite (get it?) and green chains. It's all right, but I wish he had an extra head or an extra set of hands. Electrozapper, on the other hand, gets some really cool extras. He gets an extra head I mentioned earlier and they swap easily, but the extra head isn't super tight on the ball, and can come off easily. Alongside it are four pairs of hands - closed, gripping, pointing, and splayed - and five electricity effects, meant for specific hands. There's two small electricity balls (pointing hands), a small energy effect (left splayed), a small lightning bolt (pointing hands again), and a large bolt (right fist). They attach to the hands with ease, and even the largest one won't weigh anything down. I was surprised by how well these two turned out. They look great, all the joints move well, and there's some fun extras with Electrozapper. I wish Bugman had a few more accessories, but both him and his arch-nemesis are still great figures. With SDCC approaching, I can't wait to see what else NECA has in store for this line. - 7/18/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
