Tyrannocon Rex / Autobot JP93 Transformers - Collaborative (Hasbro)Jurassic Park was a hell of a movie. It's seen a lot of toys, but never like this. I finally bit the bullet, so here we are. Right off the bat, I must address the packaging here. It'd be an amazing display backdrop if it didn't have those slots cut into it for the plastic tray, but it's still a nice diorama, with the paddock in the rain and the flipped car and whatnot. Also, they snuck Mr. DNA onto one of the inner flaps. It's almost enough to make me ignore the weirdly unimaginative names. Unlike Gigawatt and Ectotron, this one's a micro-continuity all its own, a simple dino-hunt story with no comic tie-in. It's good enough for my multiversal display. Beginning with JP, this is a really good altmode. Licensed car design, impeccable paint apart from a few odd spaces in the lettering between panels. It's roughly in scale with the big girl, and rolls nicely. Robot mode is basic but fun: mostly squarish, average articulation and a very nice shotgun accessory- I can't speak for film accuracy here, but I think this very gun appeared in the film, toted by Muldoon. In fact, he's even got the slouch hat! Nice touch. He's also wearing Ian Malcolm's glasses, but that's less obvious- and kind of odd on a character otherwise based on someone completely different. Oh well, the overall presentation is plenty solid. The meat of the set is Tyrannocon. Ugh, that name. The T-Rex mode is pretty good, with a few minor gripes; while the articulation is shockingly good and the paint and sculpt are very nice, the panel lines end up showing off a fair bit of red in between, especially around the neck. It does look a bit like the old JP toys' battle damage if you squint, but still. I guess it can't be helped; Megs was mostly purple in both modes, while the contrast here is pretty glaring. It's glaring because they ran with a high-contrast red and black for the robot mode. I can't honestly think what other colors I would've chosen (although a less vibrant red might have gone over better), but it does match the logo. The figure itself has grown on me over the last few days, particularly the 5mm peg in the dino mouth. It's just a little garish against the fleshy bits, is all. The new head is angular and dangerous-looking. Articulation is on par with most Leaders: capable of several poses, ranging from subtle to extreme. The overall design is pretty strange thanks to its late 90s origins, but it's more quirky than bothersome. Also about as subtle as using the Grimlock mold, but what other choice did they have? While I certainly have mixed feelings about this set, it's pretty fun to mess around with, and worth it on a decent sale. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
