Rob Zombie (Hellbilly Deluxe) (Asylum Ultimate Series) Review
Rob Zombie (Hellbilly Deluxe)
Asylum Ultimate Series (Art Asylum)Art Asylum lives up to both halves of their name!
I became a fan of Rob Zombie in my early 20s, around the time I discovered C-list horror. Grindhouse flicks. They're written with the same weird imagery and gritty tone as his music, and that comes through in his movies as well. I was gifted this figure (doll, really) many years ago by a good friend, and it's been prominently displayed ever since.
The doll itself is built on a rather generic 18" body, likely with an eye for reuse. Only the feet, hands, and head are unique. The boots are nice and clunky, the hands are good for clutching any number of things, and the head has a penetrating stare and very impressive rooted dreads with a grey dry-brushing. Between the pale skin, facial hair and cold expression, it comes off looking a lot like AA's Klingon Borg.
Articulation is pretty good, really: hinged toes and ankles, slight ankle tilt, shin and thigh swivels, double hinge knees, swivel-hinge hips, balljoints at the waist and chest, ball shoulders, swivel-hinge elbows and wrists.
The outfit is outstanding. Pleather duster with cloth ruffles over a loose, faded button-up shirt and topped with a brown scarf. The pants are also pleather. All the stitching is nice and neat with no loose spots, although the pleather is beginning to break down. I may have to craft a replacement. It still looks good, though the flesh-tone wrists do tend to show if the sleeves ride up. We also get one of those sweet Art Asylum coins.
Squeeze the torso and a surprisingly loud snippet of Dragula blasts forth. This feature was standard across the rest of the line, but the same songs were used for Rock in the Box. Sad, that.
This is a fine piece for any fan, a great centerpiece for a shelf full of spookiness, and just plain impressive. I will advise you to pick up a large doll stand at a secondhand store, though; this one, at least, is a shelf-diver.
