Slam Dunkin' Don (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Slam Dunkin' Don
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)After Samurai Leo, Surfer Mikey, and Space Cadet Raph, you'd think Super7 would do an Ultimate Undercover Donatello next, but nope, it's Slam Dunkin' Don. It was supposed to be Punker Don, but that got pushed back by a lot, so here we are. Granted, an Undercover Don would've been great in this format, but I guess the BBTS-exclusive Undercover Raph filled the "turtle in a trenchcoat" quota.

The portrait of the Slam Dunkin' Don was kinda weird. I suppose it's supposed to be a "game face," but the expression is still a little off-putting. Super7 and Four Horsemen did a good job recreating it in a larger scale, albeit without the goggles, and also threw in an extra head. This head has a somewhat happier expression, with his tongue hanging out, and it fits for this specific version of the character. It looks like they started going with a matte finish for this line, rather than a semi-glossy look, and I certainly prefer the new finish. The paint is mostly clean, though the teeth could use some better work.

Donatello is dressed up in a sporty outfit with a jersey and hi-top sneakers, and usually, this outfit would be red. Instead, Super7 went with a white one, a nod to a rare and valuable variant of the original figure released in 1994. S7 loves their deep-cuts, and it's nice they went with a more unique look, though I know some would've preferred the red version. The newly-tooled parts look great, with some mostly clean paint as well, including some wash on the sneakers. His jersey reads "84," the year the Turtles debuted, rather than "23," and I'm sure they had their reasons for the change. As with the other turtles, Donatello stands about 6" tall.

The articulation is almost entirely the same as previous Turtles, with Donnie getting a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, and swivel biceps and thighs. I assume the waist is a ball-peg like before, but it only swivels here, either due to the sculpt restricting it, or that it was done as just a swivel this time around. All of the joints work great, and it allows for some very nice poses. The heads and hands swap with ease, but cannot be used with the regular Donatello; the head socket is smaller, the wrist pegs are larger, and the skin tone and mask colors are different. Kind of a bummer, to be honest, as these new parts would've gone great with the previous Don.

The original Slam Dunkin' Don had only two accessories: a basketball and a trash can hoop. The basketball is a more traditional design here, rather than a turtle shell pattern, but the texturing is very nice. Adding onto the hoop are a bo staff, more of a proper length than the regular Don, a backboard, and a manhole cover base, all of which connect together to form a free-standing basketball hoop. Whenever Super7 gets innovative like this, they do great, and the assembled hoop makes for a great display piece. Other than all that, he has the extra head I mentioned earlier, yellow goggles, and six interchangeable hands: two open, two gripping (vertically-hinged), another open right with a peg in the palm to hold the basketball, and a pointing right. The ball can plug onto the pointing finger, to make it look as if he's spinning it.

While I would've loved an Undercover Donatello, this Slam Dunkin' version is really fun, thanks to the extra effort Super7 put into making him an enjoyable figure to play with and display. It would've been better if the parts were cross-compatible with the regular Donatello, but hopefully the Punker version can pull that off. We still need a red jersey version of this with a more toy-accurate ball, but I can see that being a convention exclusive or something.

Forgot to mention that the backboard doubles as a shield.
