Earl Sinclair (Dinosaurs (Neca)) Review
Earl Sinclair
Dinosaurs (Neca) (Neca)Being a toy collector isn't easy at times, with how hard things can be to track down in-store (prefer that over buying online most of the time). The NECA Dinosaurs Earl Sinclair is an example, as I had a lot of trouble finding the regular version, but thankfully a trip out of town by the folks let them get him for me.

Earl Sinclair is your usual sitcom patriarch: dopey and self-centered but mostly well-meaning. His design invokes this, with a soft, fat face and a friendly expression for (what he thinks is) a mighty megalosaurus. Eric Barnett did the sculpt, as with Baby, and it matches the puppet/suit used in the show well. The paint and wash are clean, and texturing is subtle but there. The alternate "talking" head is good, with eyes looking off to the side, and as the box shows, it was originally going to be the default head that was side-eyed. The final is better, and both portraits give Earl plenty of personality.

At around 6" tall, Earl isn't scaled well with other NECA figures, as I feel he should be a bit above seven inches, since he wasn't that much bigger than humans on the show. He's still a chunky guy, and the body looks fantastic, with plenty of sculpted folds and scales. His tail had to be packaged separate from the figure, but it pops in with ease. The color fade from green to yellow on the body is clean, and they nailed the pattern on the shirt. However, the pattern was painted onto the arm joints as well, meaning they'll chip off and leave big red disks on the elbows, and there's some white rub-off onto the back under the clothing. So yeah, it's not perfect, but he isn't the first NECA figure to have this issue.

I assume the actor had a hard time moving around in the big Earl suit, but this figure doesn't seem to have as much movement issues. He gets a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, and tail, swivel thighs, and three extra barbell joints in the tail. The joints felt a bit tighter than they should be at first, but that's probably to support the solid plastic. Even with his chunky build, Earl is plenty dynamic, being able to pull off plenty of poses especially with the extra head and hands. And with the big feet and tail, he'll have no trouble standing up unless you put him in more extreme poses.

Between him and Baby, the only accessory Earl shares with the little guy is the TV remote, which makes just as much sense with him as it does Baby. He also has plenty of hand options, with a pair of expressive hands, a pair of pointing hands, a pair of tight grips, a wide gripping left, and a wide-open right, all of which work with the various other extras. He has a six-pack of "Lava Lager," all of which can be removed from the ring, so Earl has enough to share. Lastly, there's a captain's hat that fits on both heads, and complementing that is the Fernhill Mint mug from "Life in the Faust Lane," a collectible so good Earl was willing to sell his soul for it (that should tell us toy fanatics something…).

As if one Earl wasn't enough, NECA recently put out a WESAYSO variant that's first to market at Target. There's not much difference over the base figure, just putting his tree pusher helmet and work shirt on him, and two new sets of gloved hands. The six-back of booze is reuse, but the lunch box with pair of creatures is new, coming from "Charlene's Tale" ("I don't like my lunch fraternizing with each other."). I'm not so much put off by the lack of accessories with it as I am the lack of new heads. Earl was plenty expressive on the show, and this would've been a good opportunity for some additional looks. At least the SDCC Captain Impressive looked good enough to buy right when I got the chance.

Earl's a solid, fun figure, and as I've said before, pairing him with Baby gives you plenty of ways to display them. NECA not revealing any additional characters at SDCC this past weekend was a bummer, but hopefully by year's end they'll reassure us more are coming.
