Lex Luthor gave Hal Jordan a Green Lantern ring found in Abin Sur's ship, as part of the project "Green Light" to defeat the Russian leader Superman. Jordan led the United States Green Lantern Marine Corps, which unlike the actual Green Lantern Corps, depended entirely on Jordan's single ring.
