When Hal Jordan became the Green Lantern of Earth, his overseers, the Guardians, assigned Guy Gardner to be his replacement should anything happen to him. Eventually, Gardner got his chance to prove himself as a Lantern, showing that even a Guy with a chip on his shoulder can save the world.
